A downloadable game for Linux

Tribes is an experimental tribute to Civilization games - FreeCiv, most of all.

It's a real-time arcadey take on the genre, made in a week.

Your civilization is limited to one army (led by a hero) consisting of three units. Use your hero to build cities, manage cities, fight enemy tribes. When your hero dies, game over.

Controls

  • WSAD / Arrows / RMB - scroll the camera
  • Left mouse click - move your hero around the map
  • Left mouse click on your hero - execute action.

Please note the control panel at the bottom of the screen. To the right is list of actions. There are two actions in this game:

  • Settle - create a settlement
  • Farm - create a farm

At the beginning of the game, your nomads can only "SETTLE". Later on Workers can both "SETTLE" (outside of your territory) and "FARM" (within your borders).

Now, click on the "SETTLE" button (or click on your hero) to build your first settlement. It will take apx 10 seconds. Meanwhile you can familiarize yourself with combat - just move your army towards the nearby fortress.

Once your settlement has been constructed, move your army over it and (again) click on your hero to enter it.

City

When you click on your hero while he's positioned over the city, a "city screen" will be displayed. GAME WILL PAUSE.

In upper left corner you will find "Population report". Some of your people have been already assigned to "Town Hall" - e.g. "RESEARCH". You can select next tech in upper right panel. Speed of research depends on number of cities. More cities = faster research rate.

Once you research your first tech (remember - game is paused while in City, and so is the research!), game will unlock new buildings.

Techs

  • Craftsmanship - enable "Workshop"
  • Weaving - enable "Weaver House"; unlock tech "Warrior Drill"
  • Warrior Drill - enable "Training Ground"; unlock tech "Archery"
  • Archery - enable "Archery Range"

Buildings

  • workshop - build tools for workers
  • weaver - build slingshots
  • training ground - build spears for hunters
  • archery range - enable bows for archers

Weapons

Once you construct a building, it will start producing weapons or tools.

This is not very clearly indicated in GUI, so, pls read carefully: You can't hire more soldiers then you have weapons on your stock.

If your city has 2000 unemployed people and only 20 spears, you can hire only 20 huntsmen.

List of weapons:

  • slings - 0.3 damage per soldier (every second)
  • javelins - 0.5 damage per soldier (every seconds)
  • bows - 1 damage per soldier (every second)
  • tools - required by Workers to build farms and settlements
    • settlement - requires 200 workers equipped with 200 shovels
    • farm - requires 20 workers

Thanks

So... that's pretty much it, "Done in seven days / nights" :)

Thanks goes to everybody who supported me during those seven days, most of all Marek 'Prassa' Hlavaty.

Have fun!
